Box Score McPHERSON, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- Junior Ana Guerrero (Graton, Calif.) and senior Cydney Lewis (Ottawa, Kan.) tallied second-half goals to break a scoreless tie at halftime and lead the McPherson College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over crosstown rival Central Christian College on Wednesday at McPherson Stadium.
Central Christian held a 4-3 advantage in shots through a scoreless first half before Guerrero broke through with a goal in the 61st minute off a feed from senior Kayla Faust (Manhattan, Kan.). Lewis added an unassisted tally in the 73rd minute for her second goal of the season.
The Tigers finished the game with a 9-8 edge on shots but reserve Rachel Meier (3) was the only one with multiple attempts. The Bulldogs were credited with eight shots, five of which were on goal. Guerrero finished with three shots, including two on goal, while Lewis had two shots. Rhea Vale (jr., London, England), Danielle Kakebeen (jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Dina Der Vartanian (fr., Sierra Madre, Calif.) each had one shot.
Sheryl Evans, the defending KCAC Defensive Player of the Week, registered six saves to record her second clean sheet of the season. Goldie Bougher took the loss for Central Christian, making three saves in 90 minutes in goal.
"It certainly is nice to get a win even though we [didn't play well] tonight," said head coach Doug Quint. "I kept reminding myself throughout the game how early it was in the season. Despite how poorly we played, we still shut them out. The two bright spots for us were Ana Guerrero and Emma Van Donselaar. They played quality minutes tonight and it was only fitting that Ana scored the game-winner."
The Bulldogs (2-0) take to the road Saturday to face Avila University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Kansas City, Missouri.
