SHAWNEE, Okla. --- The McPherson College women's soccer team bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 1-0 win over St. Gregory's University on Saturday at Father Victor Roberts Field.
The lone goal of the game came in the 41st minute when McPherson's
Cydney Lewis (Ottawa, Kan.) sent a shot past SGU starting keeper Jena Flewelling after a failed clear attempt by the Cavaliers (4-3).
The Bulldogs (4-1) emerged with a slim 9-8 edge in shots over the Cavaliers and a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. Seven different McPherson players had shots, including Lewis and
Ana Guerrero (Graton, Calif.) with two each.
Abi Housecraft finished with four of St. Gregory's eight shots, including the team's lone shot on goal.
Flewelling played nearly 67 minutes, registering four saves. She was relieved by Mallory Adams, who did not face a shot on goal.
Sheryl Evans (Nassau, Bahamas) played the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs. She made one save en route to her fourth clean sheet in five outings.
"Our women controlled the match throughout and did a good job of being organized defensively," said head coach
Doug Quint. "The ladies did a great job limiting attacks and keeping [SGU all-time leading scorer Housecraft] in check."
McPherson concludes its three-game road swing on Wednesday when the Bulldogs travel to Salina to face Kansas Wesleyan University in the team's KCAC opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
