McPHERSON, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- David Mwinga scored twice to lead the McPherson College men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Northwestern College (Iowa) at the Red Card Cancer Classic Saturday at McPherson Stadium.
Mwinga got the Bulldogs (3-0) on the board in the seventh minute with a goal off assists from Nick Torres and Chris Kelly. Jesus Pescador extended the lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute with a tally off another assist from Kelly.
The Red Raiders (2-4) cut the lead in half less than a minute into the second half as Daniel Zapata scored off a rebound in the 46th minute.
McPherson added an insurance goal in the 87th minute as Mwinga scored his second of the game after receiving a long service from Ian Canevari.
Northwestern outshot the Bulldogs, 10-8, and held an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Hartrick Tarr registered three shots - all on goal - to lead the Red Raiders, including one at point blank range that was scoped up by MC reserve keeper Arthur Lamparter. Wesley Lockwood added a pair of shots.
Mwinga tallied three shots, while Pescador added two to lead McPherson.
Aaron Parrott played a scoreless first half in goal for the Bulldogs, recording four saves before being relieved by Lamparter, who finished with three saves.
Matt Scott took the loss for NWC, allowing two goals and making two saves in just over 69 minutes before leaving with an injury. Mike Wick played the final 20:47, allowing just the second Mwinga goal.
"This was a good side we beat today in tough elements," said head coach Doug Quint. "I felt we were in control of the game until they scored the early goal at the beginning of the second. That changed the complexity of the game and we need to learn to put together a complete match. [I'm] very proud we were able to stay organized defensively and then find a late goal to put the game out of reach. Now we need to prepare for a tough [game against Bellevue] on Sunday."
Northwestern will face John Brown University (Ark.) at 11 a.m. Saturday in the third game of the Red Card Cancer Classic. McPherson faces Bellevue University (Neb.) at 2 p.m. Sunday to conclude the four-game event.
