Men's Tennis Falls to D-II Newman in Spring Opener

WICHITA, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- The McPherson College men's tennis team opened its Spring 2017 slate with a 7-2 loss to NCAA Division II Newman University Friday morning at Genesis Health Clubs - West Central.

The Bulldogs (0-1) trailed 3-0 after doubles with Joan-Marc Fajula Rodriguez (Catalonia, Spain) and Hector Carrillo Perales (Barcelona, Spain, Bom Salvador) dropping a close 8-6 decision to Eduardo Santos and Alejandro Gonzalez at the top position.

In singles play, Carrillo and Timo Hoelzmann (Berlin, Germany, Schadow Gymnasium) picked up victories at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions. Carrillo defeated Diego Rojo, 6-2, 6-4, while Hoelzmann led Kevin Clack, 2-1, in the first set at No. 6 singles before the latter retired.

Two other McPherson players fell in match tie-breakers. Nicolas Wahl lost to Blake Crawford at No. 4 by a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (6) score and Juan Alejandro Jimenez (Pereira, Colombia, Liceotaller San Miguel) was defeated by Lucas Norbiato at No. 5 by a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (8).

Fajula lost to Santos, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1 singles and Ahmed Lahlou (Casablanca, Morocco, Groupe Scolaire Anfa) dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (6) decision to Felipe Batistella at No. 2 singles.

McPherson returns to the courts Sunday, Feb. 19 with a match at another NCAA Division II school -- Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo.
