McPHERSON, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) --- The 22nd-ranked McPherson College men's tennis team wrapped up its 2017 home slate with a 9-0 win over Kansas Wesleyan University Thursday afternoon at the McPherson High School courts.
The dual marked the final home match for the team's lone senior,
Joan-Marc Fajula Rodriguez (Catalonia, Spain).
Fajula, a multiple-time all-American, posted a pair of victories. He paired with
Hector Carrillo Perales (Barcelona, Spain, Bom Salvador) for an 8-2 win over Mario Rincon and Felix Diaz at No. 1 doubles, then topped Samir Lopez by a 6-2, 6-3 score at No. 1 singles.
The McPherson tandems of
Ahmed Lahlou (Casablanca, Morocco, Groupe Scolaire Anfa) and
Nicolas Wahl at No. 2 and
Timo Hoelzmann (Berlin, Germany, Schadow Gymnasium) and
Juan Alejandro Jimenez (Pereira, Colombia, Liceotaller San Miguel) at No. 3 posted matching 8-3 victories to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead after doubles.
Carrillo added a 6-1, 7-5 win over Michael Moody at No. 3 singles, while Wahl (6-2, 6-2 over Diaz at No. 4), Jimenez (6-0, 6-2 over Thomas Tran at No. 5) and Hoelzmann (6-3, 6-1 over Mitchell Byers at No. 6) posted straight-set victories.
Lahlou needed a match tiebreaker to dispatch Rincon at No. 2, winning 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (5).
The victory sets up a potential winner-take-all match between the Bulldogs (8-3, 7-0 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) and rival Bethany College (11-5, 6-0 KCAC) for the regular-season league title and the top seed in the upcoming KCAC tournament. That match will be 6 p.m. Monday evening at Smoky Valley High School in Lindsborg.
