AURORA, Colo. (macbulldogs.com) --- A goal in the third minute by
Danielle Kakebeen (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., San Bernardino Valley College) gave the McPherson College women's soccer team a lead it would not concede in a 2-0 win over Johnson & Wales University (Colo.) Monday afternoon to wrap up the JWU Denver Kickoff Classic at Aurora Sports Park.
Kakebeen took a pass across the box from
Ana Guerrero (Graton, Calif., Santa Rosa JC) and chipped the ball in to the right of Wildcat goalkeeper Katelyn Peters.
JWU Denver (0-1-1) held a slim 3-2 advantage over McPherson (1-1) in shots in the first half, but took five corner kicks.
The Bulldogs continued to face pressure throughout the match from the hosts, but the defense would not surrender a goal.
McPherson received an insurance goal in the 65th minute when
Alexis Lynn (Pleasant Hill, Mo., Pleasant Hill HS) tallied her second goal in as many days when she put in the rebound off a Peters save.
JWU Denver had eight of the 11 shots taken in the second half to finish with an 11-5 edge overall.
Guerrero had two of McPherson's five shots, while Kakebeen, Lynn and
Veronica Samaniego (Mission, Kan., Kansas City Kansas CC) each had one.
Asianna Harris led JWU Denver with a game-high four shots.
Christie Silber (Simi Valley, Calif., Simi Valley HS / Simi Valley Eclipse SC) recorded five saves en route to her first collegiate clean sheet for McPherson. Peters finished with two saves.
The Bulldogs are idle until Saturday, Sept. 2, when they host future KCAC member Avila University at 1 p.m. at The Kennel.
