McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College tennis teams took a break from KCAC play on Tuesday and hosted the NCAA DII Emporia State University Hornets in a non-conference match at the Bulldog Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs came away with a split, the women falling to the Hornets 5-2, but the men winning a thriller 4-3.

Nearly every match on both side were extremely competitive, but for the women they weren't able to string enough points together to win a few more matches. In doubles, they got a dominant win from the #3 team of Vanessa Mundo and Kendra Maples, 6-0, but dropped the #1 and #2 matches 6-3, to lose the double point.

Trailing 1-0 after doubles, the Bulldogs tried to make a comeback in the singles portion of the dual. Unfortunately the Hornets were too strong at the top of their lineup. The Hornets clinched the dual winning at #3, #1, and #4. With the match decided, ESU added a fifth point by winning at #2, and the Bulldogs picked up two wins at #5 and #6.

On the men's side, the Bulldogs picked up a big win, and they did so by winning at the top of the lineup. They got things started by securing the double point, winning two extremely tight matches at #1 and #2. They nearly had a three match sweep, but lost a close match at #3 by a single break of serve.

That doubles point would prove to be huge as the Bulldogs and Hornets would split the six singles matches evenly 3-3. After doubles, the first three single matches went on court. Martin Millos put the Bulldogs up 2-0 winning at #3 and was followed by Michael Beltran who won at #1, giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Julien Bodin, who has had a tough go of it recently, bounced back and clinched the match for the Bulldogs at #2.

Coach Stafford and Emporia State gave us a lot of solid matches and hopefully this will help us keep moving forward the rest of the week."

The loss drops the Bulldog women to 5-5 overall, while the men move to 8-1 on the season. Both teams resume KCAC play tomorrow when they host the Tabor College Bluejays at 4:00 pm at the Bulldog Tennis Center.
