Bulldogs Sweep Friends, Canar Ties HR Mark

Wichita, Kan. – The McPherson College baseball team capped off a perfect week, sweeping the Friends University Falcons in a three game series in Wichita this weekend, outscoring the Falcons 34 to 5.

The Bulldogs opened the series with an 8-3 win, with Alex Escobar picking up his KCAC leading 8th win of the season. Escobar went eight innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. In the 9th inning, the Bulldog went to the bullpen and brought in freshman Brett Maddock. He pitched the final inning holding the Falcons hitless and scoreless with a strikeout and two walks.

The Bulldog offense in game one scored eight runs on 11 hits. Hunter Robinson, in the DH position led the offense with a 3 for 5 performance. Joining Robinson with multiple hits were Noah Nelson and Kyle Lux. Four of the 11 Bulldog hits went for extra bases including doubles by James Canar and Jake Pearson, and homeruns by Nelson, and Trevor Johnson.

Game two was a blowout, with the Bulldogs on the positive end of a 17-0 shelllacking. The Dogs put on an offensive clinic, pounding our 17 runs on 18 hits, with half of those hits being of the extra base variety. The Bulldogs were led by freshman Giovanni Ramirez who was a perfect 3 for 3 with three singles. Lux, Canar, Jonah Shabry, and Tyler Carrasco also recorded multiple hits. Carrasco 3 for 4, and the others 2 for 3. The Bulldogs had four homeruns in the game, one each from Nelson, Lux, Canar, and Pearson.

Tyler Norris was on the bump to start game two. He went five innings giving up just two hits with four strikeouts and five walks. Jake Herman came out of the bullpen in the sixth, and went the rest of the way. He finished with two hits and a strikeout and a walk.

With a 2-0 lead in the series, the Bulldog went for the sweep on Sunday afternoon. They picked up where they left off in game two, and finished off the Falcons 9-2. The Bulldogs got their nine runs on 11 more hits that include a pair of doubles, and a pair of homeruns. Lux and Robinson hit the doubles, and Canar and Pearson hit the bombs. For Canar it was his 16th homerun of the season, tying the Bulldogs' single season record, set by Kyle Lux last season.

Blake Maddock, and Zach Reynolds combined to lead the Bulldogs to victory from the hill. Maddock got the start and the win, going five innings and allowing two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks. Reynolds picked up the save in four innings of scoreless work, also allowing three hits.

"This was a complete weekend for us," commented Coach Moses. "We scored crooked numbers in multiple innings and pitched extremely well. I was happy to see a lot of new contributors step up."

With the sweep, the Bulldogs are now 31-7 on the season, and 19-7 in KCAC play. They are currently on a four game winning streak, and will look to make it five in a row on Monday afternoon when they host the Sterling College Warriors at Bulldog Park at 3:00. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but with poor weather likely, the game was moved up a day.
