Bulldogs Split with USM on the Road

Leavenworth, Kan. – The McPherson College softball team went on the road Saturday, and split a doubleheader with the University of St. Mary Spires. There wasn't a lot of offense in either game. The Spires took game one 2-1, but the Bulldogs bounced back to take the finale 3-1.

Raegan Kleppe got the start in the circle for the Bulldogs in game one, and picked up the loss. She went the distance allowing two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and just one walk. Offensively the Bulldogs didn't give Kleppe much support. They managed just one run on three hits. Brandy Trengove had two of the three hits including a double. The third hit was a single off the bat of Mackenzie Egan.

Game one was a pitcher's duel, a scoreless affair through the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth the Spires finally got to Kleppe, putting a pair of runs on the score board. A half inning later, the Bulldogs got on the board and cut the deficit in half. Unfortunately they were unable to manufacture any more runs, and the seven game winning streak the Bulldogs had been on, came to an end.

In the second game, the Bulldog bats came alive. The offense had ten hits and pushed across three runs. Trengove, Alex Garcia, and Summer Garcia led the way with multiple hits. Trengove was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles, Alex Garcia went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, and Summer Garcia was a perfect 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI.

Jordyn Johnson got the start in the circle in game two for the Bulldogs. She pitched a gem, going seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits.

Bulldog skipper, Tony Segovia summed up the doubleheader saying, "Not the outcome we wanted game 1. Pitchers had a good day both games. Proud of the team for getting game 2 on the road. We will continue to work and get ready for Wednesday. "

The split puts the Bulldogs at 21-16 overall, and 13-5 in the KCAC. They will head back out on the road on Wednesday, heading north for a doubleheader against the York College Panthers.
