McPHERSON, Kan. — With a pair of wins over the weekend, the McPherson College Bulldogs have once again clinched the KCAC regular season championship, marking the fourth consecutive year MC has achieved the feat and their sixth title in the last seven seasons.
Riding a 45-match winning streak into the final two regular season competitions, the Bulldogs took care of business Friday (Apr. 19) against Ottawa University 5-2, before coming home Saturday and sweeping the University of Saint Mary on Senior Day.
MATCH ONE – McPherson 5, Ottawa 2
The Bulldogs were in a fight early, taking a 1-0 advantage for the doubles point after Martin Millos and Michael Beltran took down Jhoel Quinonez and Jarmo Wienese 6-3. Oscar Brouwer and Daniel Marcano gave the Bulldogs the doubles point, winning 7-5 over Santiago Tartaglia and Julian Toloza.
Ottawa won on court three when Oscar Giorgio and Ben Russell took down Celien Botlan and Arthur Nardy 6-3.
Beltran put the Bulldogs on top 2-0 with a quick 6-0, 6-3 win over Wienese, but the Braves answered with a 6-2, 6-2 win by Tartaglia over Arthur Nardy.
Marcus Nardy dropped the first set 7-6 (5), but won set two 6-2 before Quinonez retired.
Ottawa got their only other point when Toloza defeated Millos 6-1, 6-4, but MC got stronger down the stretch, with a pair of victories in #5 and #6. Botlan clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Giorgio, then Daniel Marcano finished it off with a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing of Almog Cohen.
MATCH TWO – McPherson 7, Saint Mary 0
The Bulldogs made quick work of the doubles point on Saturday, winning 6-1 on all three courts.
MC got off to a hot start in singles and never slowed down, winning in straight sets on all courts, including six 6-0 sets.
Millos pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Will Ogrizovich, then Marcus Nardy knocked off Evan Maritz 6-0, 6-3. Beltran clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kevin Eutsey.
But the Bulldogs weren't done there, winning on the final three courts by dropping just two games.
Botlan got it started with a quick 6-0, 6-1 win over Leyton Ross, then Brouwer swept Demitri Serrano 6-0, 6-0. Texas Ranger Schmidt finished it off with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jerod Zimmerman.
The Bulldogs open the KCAC Tournament Friday (Apr. 26) at 2:00 p.m. and will face the winner between fourth-seeded Sterling College and fifth-seeded Kansas Wesleyan University.
