Box Score Winfield, Kan. – The McPherson men’s soccer team finished the KCAC road season undefeated with another offensive explosion Wednesday night, scoring eight goals to defeat Southwestern College 8-1 in Winfield.
“Our team faced some major adversity tonight between players sick and weather conditions,” said McPherson head coach Doug Quint. “I was pleased with the way we came out to play. The first 20 minutes of our match were brilliant.”
The win improves the Bulldogs to 12-1 on the season and 6-0 in KCAC play, while the Moundbuilders drop to 1-12-1 and 0-6 in conference play. The win broke the McPherson College single season wins record of 11.
Senior forward Armando Rodriguez increased his career goals record to 58 with the win, as he found the net three times to lead McPherson to their ninth straight victory. McPherson’s eight goals ties the team for third on the all time single game goals list.
McPherson put the game out of reach 20 minutes into the first half when the Bulldogs scored six goals in just under 19 minutes.
Freshman Sam Tucker began the outburst when he scored on an assist from Daniel Barba in the seventh minute. Around seven minutes later, Rodriguez netted McPherson’s second and third goals. McPherson added three more prior to intermission.
The Bulldog’s dominated play in the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Moundbuilders, 14-2.
The McPherson defense let their guard down early in the second half when George McNitt netted a pass from Andrew Bonvehi for the Moundbuilder’s only goal of the contest.
McPherson followed the Southwestern goal with two of their own off shots from Jared Keintz and Luis Martinez.
The Bulldogs took 21 shots overall, while connecting 15 shots on frame. The McPherson defense was strong again, limiting Southwestern to five shots.
Senior goalkeeper John Godfrey recorded his first win of the season, tallying two saves and allowing one goal in 90 minutes.
The Bulldogs return to McPherson Stadium on Saturday at 8:00 p.m., when they take on the University of Saint Mary.
