Box Score 3 The McPherson Lady Bulldogs kicked off their season at the Sterling Invitational, Sterling, Kan., this weekend winning one of three matches.
“This weekend helped us to mature as a team and to get used to playing with each other as we have 11 new players out of our 17,” said McPherson head coach Susan Barton. “We will keep striving to get better.”
Match one – McPherson vs. Central Christian College
The Bulldogs began the weekend playing cross town rivals Central Christian in their first match. McPherson came out shaky, but won the match in three games (25-17, 25-22, 25-20).
“It was a tough match though for the fact that there were not very many rallies,” said McPherson head coach Susan Barton. “It was a sloppy match, but a good win to start the season.”
Senior Kiley Loesch led the team with 15 kills followed by sophomore Amy Neufeld who had 7 kills.
Freshman setter Lindsey Linnebur led the team in assists with ten on twenty attempts.
Other highlights for the match included two newcomers Savannah Sievers and Brooke Wedel leading the team with ten digs each.
Match two – McPherson vs. Mid America Nazarene University
The Ladies then started their second day of the Sterling Invitational with a loss to MidAmerica Nazarene, 1-3 (25-21,20-25,20-25,21-25).
“Mid America Nazarene is a good squad, but we were capable of winning this match,” said McPherson head coach Susan Barton. “The match is definitely is one that got away from us.”
In the loss, Kiley Loesch recorded 19 kills with only six errors followed again by Neufeld who had eight kills and seven errors.
Lindsey Linnebur and Kelley Green led the Bulldogs in assists with 18.
Match three – McPherson vs. Colorado Christian University
The Bulldogs ended the weekend with a 0-3 (23-25,13-25,17-25) loss to Colorado Christian University.
“This match had a number of long rallies that we just didn’t win,” said McPherson head coach Susan Barton. “It will come.”
“We just have to keep pushing forward and gain more experience.”
Loesch led McPherson with 16 kills.
The Bulldogs will be back in action Wednesday, September 9, as they open KCAC play on the road against Kansas Wesleyan University. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
