McPherson, Kan. - The McPherson College men’s soccer team travels the few miles across McPherson to face Central Christian College on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 8 p.m., in its final non-conference game before opening Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference action. The Bulldogs host the University of Saint Mary in the KCAC opener for both schools on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 8 p.m.
McPherson (5-2-0) enters the week with a four game win streak following a 2-1 victory over previous ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan University. The Bulldogs controlled the tempo from the onset of the match with goals in the eighth minute and 36th minute. OWU scored their lone goal on a penalty kick in the 84th minute.
With senior goalkeeper Blake Jett sidelined with injury, junior Nathan Garrison stepped in and earned his first career victory with the Bulldogs. He posted seven saves, while allowing the one goal in 90 minutes of action. Senior central defender Tyler Tank and junior defensive midfielder Michael Phillips also played key roles in the MC defense last week.
Freshman Heriberto Garcia notched his second goal of the season in the eighth minute on a free kick from just outside the penalty area. Garcia bent his strike around the Eagle wall and into the lower left corner of the net. Senior Tarek Khalidi tallied MC’s other goal. (continued on pg. 3)
Central Christian, a member of the Midlands Athletic Conference, comes into the match with a 5-3-0 overall record and wins in two of their last three. Last season, McPherson defeated the Tigers, 2-0, at McPherson Stadium.
The Spires have lost six straight en route to a 1-8-0 overall record. USM’s lone victory this season came on Sept. 9 at William Penn (Iowa). Saint Mary’s opponents have outscored the Spires 23-7 during the streak.
Both matches will be streamed live. McPherson’s midweek match against Central Christian will be on the Tiger Broadcast Network (www.ccctigers.com), while Saturday’s will be on Macbulldogs.com.
Next week, the Bulldogs continue conference play with a pair of matches against Tabor College and Ottawa University.
Noting Central Christian
- The Tigers are 5-3-0 on the season, including a 2-2 record against Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference opponents.
- Central opened the season with a three game win streak, as they outscored their opponents by a total off 12-4, including a shutout of McMurray University.
- Forward Gunnar Kelly leads the team with seven goals, including a hat trick against Dallas Christian (Texas) on Sept. 2. He is goalless in the Tigers last two matches.
- Goalkeepers Alex Akrawi and David Armstrong have split time in goal for the Tigers. Akrawi owns a 3-2-0 overall record and a 2.64 goals against average, while Armstrong is 2-1 with a 1.76 goals against average and .706 save percentage.
- The Tigers finished 2010 with a 12-6-1 overall record and 2-2-0 conference mark.

Noting University of Saint Mary
- University of Saint Mary is 1-8-0 so far this year and the Spires are winless in their last six games with opponents outscoring the Spires 23-7 during the stretch.
- USM’s lone victory this season came on Sept. 9 at William Penn University (Iowa). The Spires were outshot 19-10, but capitalized on their chances with goals in the fifth and 72nd minutes
- Forward Matt Fields leads the team with three goals and 16 shots, while Adam Newbanks is
second on the team with two goals.
- Goalkeeper Alex Waite has made seven starts this season and has a 3.93 goals against average. He ranks amongst the top five nationally in total saves (70) and saves per game (8.75).
