McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson vs. Kansas Wesleyan game has turned into a rivalry contest in recent years and Wednesday’s competition did not disappoint.  In a very physical and aggressive match, KWU got the win, 3-2, in overtime.  MC is now 5-3-1 and 0-1 in the KCAC.

It was apparent that the first 30 minutes of the game was used by each team to get a feel for their opponent.  Then, in seemingly back-to-back plays, the Coyotes jumped to a 2-0 lead and held all of the momentum heading into halftime.

Coming out of the locker room, KWU kept taking it to McPherson, putting up five shots in the first 10 minutes, three of which were saved by Bulldog goalkeeper Taylor Parrott (Wichita, Kan.).  MC’s Johnny Nuthall (Reno, Nev.) got his first chance of the second half in the 59th minute after a foul on Kansas Wesleyan and capitalized with a laser into the top-left corner, bringing the Bulldogs within one.  Nearly five minutes later, a corner kick from Oscar Cortez (Dallas, Texas) was headed by Nik Burkevics (Chatsworth, Calif.) to the feet of Brooks Walsh (Valencia, Calif.) who kicked it in for the equalizer with 25 minutes remaining on the clock.  The rest of regulation went back and forth with each team creating scoring chances but McPherson seemed to hold all of the energy going into overtime.

Seven minutes into OT, KWU’s Briant Reyes was granted a penalty kick after a foul on keeper Parrott and punched in the game-winning goal, giving the Coyotes the victory at 3-2.

22 shots were posted by McPherson and eight of them were on goal.  Nuthall led the squad with seven shots while Cortez had the most shots on target with three.

Parrott played a solid game in the goal, tallying six saves in the 97:39 contest.

McPherson will now travel up to Ottawa, Kansas to take on the OU Braves for a Saturday afternoon showdown on September 6th.  The game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (CT)
