McPherson, Kan. – A two-goal loss to Southwestern College in the KCAC tournament quarterfinals ends the season for McPherson women’s soccer; they finish the year 7-9-2 and were 5-4 in the conference.

The first half of the quarterfinal match between MC and the Moundbuilders was controlled almost completely by the Lady Bulldogs as they attempted to put SWC away early; MC racked up 11 shots in the opening period compared to just six of Southwestern.  Contrary to what McPherson was hoping for, the Lady Builders defense put up a strong fight and made it to halftime tied at 0-0.

The game’s first goal came in the 52nd minute by a Moundbuilder mid-fielder on a counter-attack which gave Southwestern control of the match for the first time.  MC pushed back, attacking SWC’s D but could not break through.  While the Bulldogs were in attacking mode, a strong header by a Southwestern defender gave them an easy two-on-one which Joy Reyes played to Aly Sparkman for the game’s final goal in the 87th minute, giving the Lady Builders the 2-0 victory.

McPherson didn’t back off their shot taking in the second period, posting 13 which combined with their first half total gave them 24 attempts in the match; 10 shots were needed to be saved by SWC’s goalie.  Senior Cheyna Buchman (McPherson, Kan.) in her last game as a Bulldog took seven total shots, placing four on target.

Fellow senior and MC goal keeper Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) tallied four saves in her McPherson College finale.

The 2012 season is now finished for the Lady Bulldogs.  Head coach Rob Talley and his staff will now look to the future and focus their efforts on recruiting and how to improve the squad for 2013.
