Hastings, Neb. – The McPherson College men’s tennis team journeyed to Hastings, Nebraska over the weekend to take on Hastings College and Doane College of the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs coming off their first loss of the season played very steady and very stingy in defeating Hastings College 8-1 and followed it up with a shut out of Doane College, defeating the Tigers 9-0.
Against Hastings College, the Bulldogs got quick and impressive wins from their top two doubles teams downing their Bronco opponents 8-4 respectively. McPherson was looking for a sweep of doubles with a victory at number three doubles, but a few miscues gave the Bulldog duo of Sean De Young (Anaheim, Calif.) and Jordan Stewart (Sterling, Kan.) their first loss of the season losing 8-5.
The Bulldogs top three singles players came through quickly to secure the match for McPherson. McPherson sophomore Mark Mahan (Fullerton, Calif.) clinched the match with his victory at number three singles and the Bulldogs bottom half of the ladder cleaned up the rest of the match points.
Against Doane College, the Bulldogs didn’t let up their play from earlier downing the Tigers 9-0. The Bulldogs swept all of the doubles points thanks to an impressive come from behind win by senior Cody Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Jonathan Wickramsinghe (Hesperia, Calif.). The Bulldog duo found themselves down 0-5 and could not get much going. Compton and Wickramasinghe were able to regroup and chip away at the Doane lead eventually winning the match 9-7.
In singles it was much the same as the Bulldogs played sharp and patient despite very high winds. The Bulldogs swept all of the singles points without dropping a set.
The Bulldogs now head to Lawrence to take on Baker University at the Jayhawk Indoor Tennis Center at 3:00p.m. (CT)
