Salina, Kan. - The McPherson College men’s tennis team traveled to Salina to take on the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes at the Genesis Health Club indoor tennis facility on Thursday. The Bulldogs proved too much for the shorthanded Coyotes as McPherson ran away with the match sweeping Kansas Wesleyan 9-0.
Beginning the match with a 3-0 advantage, the Bulldogs settled the match early by claiming the two doubles points available. McPherson sophomore Mark Mahan (Fullerton, Calif.) and junior Torsten Keil-Long (Claremont, Calif.) played at the Bulldogs top spot today and made quick work of the Coyotes top duo defeating them 8-1. The Bulldogs number two doubles team had a little more trouble as they held off a late surge from Kansas Wesleyan eventually winning their match 8-6 and clinching the match victory for McPherson.
With a long weekend of matches looming for the Bulldogs, McPherson used it’s team’s depth to sweep the rest of the singles matches. Sophomore Sean De Young (Anaheim, Calif.) played in the top spot for McPherson and rose to the challenge defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Jordan Stewart (Sterling, Kan.) held off his opponent 6-3, 6-4 and Senior Cody Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) found himself down 1-4 before reeling off 11 games straight to defeat his opponent 6-4, 6-0. Freshman Michael Irwin (Wichita, Kan.) was the only Bulldog to surrender a set, but adjusted his game plan and rebounded to defeat his opponent 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Bulldogs have a busy weekend ahead as they travel to Newton for a triangular with Bethel College and John Brown University. McPherson will face Bethel College at Newton High School at 9:00 a.m. before playing John Brown University at 12:00 p.m. Sunday, the Bulldogs travel to Liberal, Missouri to take on Missouri Valley College in a tough regional match.
