McPherson, Kan. – It took McPherson a few minutes to get going but once they did, they produced goals in a hurry. The 5-1 rout over the Braves moves Mac to 5-6 overall and 2-1, sitting third, in the KCAC.
"We had a nice effort today coming off short rest," said Coach Quint. "We played McPherson Soccer today and it was a lot of fun to watch. Ottawa has a very organized side and we broke them down well and created a lot of chances in the run of play. It was a very strong response after our poor performance in Salina on Wednesday."
It took 29 minutes for MC to put their first goal past the OU keeper but it was a beauty, coming from
Johnny Nuthall (Reno, Nev.) off a
Nick Torres (McPherson, Kan.) assist.
Unfortunately, not even one minute later, the Braves were awarded a free kick in dangerous territory. On a very questionable start whistle by the center official, OU slid one past Mac keeper
Taylor Parrott (Wichita, Kan.) to tie things up at one goal apiece.
McPherson was determined to take the momentum back and did so with back-to-back goals less than two minutes after their conceded goal.
Octavio Villa (Desoto, Kan.) got his first score of the season courtesy of
Rafael Fuentes (Los Angeles, Calif.) The second goal for MC was Nuthall's second as he popped in a rebound of
Kevin Aka (Paris, France).
McPherson continued to knock at the door but couldn't get another past Ottawa, going into halftime up 3-1.
On the first offensive play in the second period for Mac, Nuthall passed an amazing cross in for Villa who, on a diving header, put it in the upper-90 for his second goal of the day. 20 minutes later and Villa returned the favor slotting one to Nuthall who completed his hat trick, giving McPherson a very comfortable 5-1 advantage.
McPherson coasted the rest of the way, playing reserves for the final few.
Nuthall had an unbelievable day for the Bulldogs, recording three goals on his six shots, five of which were on frame; he also had his one assist for seven total points. Villa had a career game for Mac, logging two goals on four shots with an assist as well. MC took 21 total shots at goal finding the keeper on five and the net on five.
Parrott gave up just the one goal in his 90 minutes of action; he tallied five saves in his fourth win of the season.
The 'Dogs will travel to Wichita, Kansas for their next match as they face Friends University on October 16
th; the contest is set for 8:30 p.m. (CT)
