Bartlesville, Okla. – The McPherson College volleyball team returned to winning form on Friday night, sweeping the Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles on their home floor.
The night nearly got off to a rough start, as the Bulldogs found themselves down 17-13 midway through the opening set. After a timeout, the Bulldogs rallied to win five straight points, and take a 18-17 lead, their first since early in the set. The Eagles wouldn't go away, but instead won the next four points to retake the lead 21-18. The Eagles had two set points at 24-22 before the Bulldogs rallied again to tie the set at 24. Eventually, the Bulldogs would find a way to push points on their serve, and they finished off the Eagles in set 1, 27-25.
That come from behind victory in set 1 shifted the momentum in the match, and from there it was all Bulldogs. They found their form, and put their foot on the gas. They rolled to a decisive 25-10 win in set 2, then completed the sweep by taking the final set 25-13.
Aidan Brown (Fr. Sterling, Ill.) had another monster night offensively for the Bulldogs. She hit .432 on the night, finishing with 20 kills on 37 attempts and only 4 errors. She also reached, what is likely the first of many milestones in her young career, reaching the 100 kill threshold. She now has 116 kills on the season. As a team, the Bulldogs had 46 kills, and Cynarah Rodriguez (Fr. Amarillo, Texas) assisted on 31 of them.
On defense, Reven Bradbury (Sr. Castle Rock, Colo.) led the team in digs, with 17, averaging just under six per set, and at the net it was Sydney Burton (Sr. Stillwell, Kan.) who led the team with one solo block, and had an assist on another.
"Tonight was a great step forward for MAC volleyball!" said Bulldog head coach Cory Cahill. "Some light bulbs definitely went off for us tonight in the best of ways. If we keep making strides like this, I'm excited to see where we get to. Go Bulldogs!"
The Bulldogs are now 5-3 overall and 2-1 in KCAC play. They will be back on the court next weekend for another KCAC triangular. The Bulldogs travel to Salina, Kansas for matches against Kansas Wesleyan University and Tabor College. The Bulldogs will play KWU at 10:00 am and then Tabor College at 12:00 pm.
