Winfield, Kan. – The McPherson College tennis teams were back on court again Tuesday, going on the road for a match with Southwestern College. The Bulldogs split with the Moundbuilders, the men winning 4-3, and the women falling 5-2.
It was a tough day for the Bulldog women. They lost all three doubles matches by a single break of serve. It was the first time in KCAC play that the Bulldogs didn't secure the doubles point. Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, the Bulldogs were hoping to bounce back and still pick up a team win.
Things didn't go as planned as the Bulldogs were only able to score two singles wins, but had a few points gone the other way, the Bulldogs would have come away with a 4-3 win. Instead, things went the way of the Builders at #4 and #5. The Bulldog wins came at from Polina Khoroshevskaya at #3 and Kendra Maples at #6.
Coach Allen commented on the ladies' performance saying, "I thought our women fought for every point out there, but give it to Southwestern they were just a little tougher in the important moments. I hope we see them again in the KCAC playoffs"

On the men's side, the match was probably closer than it should have been. Like the women, things started poorly, failing to secure the doubles point. The Bulldogs won at #2 doubles, but lost both the #1 and #3 matches in tiebreakers.
The Bulldogs picked up their first point, tying the match at 1, when Michael Beltran won his match at #2. Martin Millos then came of the court with a win at #3 to put the Bulldogs up 2-1. The Builders tied it at 2-2 winning at #1. The Bulldogs retook the lead 3-2 with a win from Jacob Turley at #4. The Bulldog needed just one of the final two matches on court Nico Wahl at #5, and Trey Murphy at #6. Murphy gave the Bulldogs the win, clinching the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
"We probably should have closed the match a bit sooner," said Coach Allen. "We had opportunities to win the doubles point and just didn't close out matches. Fortunately we had some really good performances in singles that helped us to the win. I know we can go up another level."
