McPherson, Kan. – Junior Stachea Perea (Colorado Springs, Colo.) netted the game winning goal in the 97th minute, as the McPherson College women’s soccer team defeated Southwestern College, 1-0, in a crucial KCAC match on Wednesday evening.

With the win, McPherson improved to 7-7-2 overall, 4-3-1 in the KCAC and captured a spot in the KCAC postseason tournament, while Southwestern falls to 1-14-1 overall and 0-7-1 in league play.

After 90 minutes of scoreless action, Perea netted her first goal of the season off a deflected clearance. Senior Richelle Mascaro (Tujunga, Calif.) sent a free kick into the penalty area that was saved, but not held, by the Southwestern goalkeeper. Following a pair of deflections, Perea finished it off for the 1-0 overtime win.

Overall, McPherson dominated possession. The Bulldogs outshot the Moundbuilders 29-5, including 15 shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Tori Verdeick (New Castle, Colo.) recorded her first career shutout in 97 minutes of play.

McPherson returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 20 in their season finale against Kansas Wesleyan University. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. at Salina Central Stadium.
