Bulldogs finish non-conference season at Oklahoma Baptist and Mid-America Christian

The Matchup
It has been an up and down start to the season for the McPherson College soccer team as the Bulldogs enter the final weekend of its non-conference season with matchups against Oklahoma Baptists University (3-1-0) and Mid-America Christian University (2-2-2). The Bulldogs will meet with Bison on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., before taking on the Evangels on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

McPherson enters the weekend with a 3-2-1 record, including wins against Manhattan Christian College, Briar Cliff University and Central Christian College. The Bulldogs dropped its most recent match against Rogers State University, 4-0. The Hillcats controlled much of the possession, outshooting the Bulldogs 22-9. Head coach Doug Quint used the match to rest some of his regulars.

Senior forward Brent Mulford (Topeka, Kan.) leads the team with three goals, while Tyler Tank (Austin, Texas) and Andrew Suits (Henderson, Nev.) have registered two goals apiece. Offensively, MC has outshot its opponents 94-75, including 33 shots on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Blake Jett (Fort Worth, Texas)split time with freshman Cory Obermeyer (Emporia, Kan.) in the last match, but remains the team’s primary goalkeeper entering the weekend. In 531:21 minutes, Jett owns a 1.186 goals against average and a .750 saves percentage. He possesses a 3-2-1 record on the season, including a pair of shutouts.

Following the weekend, McPherson moves into KCAC play with an Oct. 2 match at the University of Saint Mary. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. in Leavenworth, Kan.

Last Week for the Bulldogs

McPherson ended its third week of the season with a 1-1-0 record, including a shutout win against Central Christian College. In the Bulldogs mid-week win against Central, junior defender Tyler Tank recorded his second career game winning goal off an assist from Geverton Ost in the 48th minute. MC added its second goal just two minutes later on a Central Christian own goal.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs made their first road trip of the season to Claremore, Okla., to take on Rogers State University. A combination of heat and sore bodies caught up to the Bulldogs as the Hillcats defeated McPherson, 4-0. Junior forward Tarek Khalidi led the MC offense with three shots, including two on goal.

Scouting OBU
The Bison (3-1-0) enter the match on a three game win streak, including a shutout win against Northwood University (Texas). Oklahoma Baptist battled through injuries and bad luck to a disappointing 5-10-3 record, including a 2-6-0 conference mark in 2009. OBU’s lone conference wins came against Wayland Baptist University (Texas) and Mid-America Christian (Okla.).They return 13 players from the 2009 team, including All-Sooner Athletic Conference selection Victor Costa.

Costa has been the driving force so far for the Bison, as he leads the team with four points resulting from two goals. Costa, who accounted for 14 of OBU’s 38 goals a year ago, has two of the team’s three goals so far.

Defensively, the Bison have not allowed more than one goal in any match this season behind senior goalkeeper Jacob Hibbard. Hibbard is 3-1-1 on the season with a 0.990 goals against average and .769 save percentage.

Head coach Brent Coates is in his fourth season at the helm of the Bison men’s soccer program.

Scouting Mid-America
The Evangels (2-2-2) have righted the ship over the past two matches with wins at Bacone University and at Southwestern College. Prior to its pair of wins, MACU was 0-2-2, including losses at Southwestern Assemblies of God University and Belhaven University. Over the past two matches, Mid-America has scored six goals.

Junior defender Jeremiah Huff currently leads the team with seven points on three goals and one assist, while sophomore forward Arturo Alcala ranks second on the squad with six points. Two of Huff’s three goals were netted in the Evangels 3-0 win against Southwestern College. Alacala’s six points consist of two goals and two assists.

Senior goalkeeper Austin Custar leads the Evangel defense. Custar has started all six games in goal for MACU, registering a 1.240 goals against average and a .733 save percentage. He has tallied 22 saves, while allowing eight goals on the season. Zach Bice is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Mid-America men’s soccer program.
