Shawnee, Okla. – Mac softball competed in the OBU Softball Festival the first weekend of March; it was an impromptu tournament due to the snow accumulation on the fields that were scheduled for use in the Friends University tournament.  The Lady ‘Dogs went 0-3 in Oklahoma, losing to Saint Gregory’s and Hastings on Friday followed by Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday.

Game –  SGU – L 0-9

MC started the festival against one of the host schools, Saint Gregory’s.  The Cavaliers put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second to get things going early.  Two and a half scoreless innings followed before seven runs in the fourth inning put SGU ahead by eight.  After not scoring in the top of the fifth, the contest was called due to the run-rule; in the NAIA, if a team is ahead by eight or more runs after five innings, the game is called.

Only two hits were tallied by McPherson with one coming in the fourth and the other in the fifth.  Amanda (Grace) Baxter (Pueblo, Colo.) and Sydney Lipton (Wellington, Kan.) were the two Bulldogs who put the ball in play; Jenna Kaiser (Billings, Mont.) also made it safely to first after a dropped fly ball.

The Lady Cavaliers totaled 12 hits in their victory, three coming from Allison Conyers; she also logged a team-high four RBIs on her grand slam and scored twice herself as well.  Caitlin O’Hagan and Callie Pacheco each recorded two hits while Whitney Anderson tallied two RBIs.  Five other SGU players earned one hit.

Allison Love (Tulsa, Okla.) pitched the complete four-inning game, putting up one strikeout, one groundout and two fly outs out of the 19 batters faced.  She ended the game with nine earned runs and 12 hits to her record.

Game 2 – Hastings – L 6-11

In the Bulldogs’ second game of the day, they came to play early, scoring three runs in the first inning coming off of Kaiser’s three-run homerun which brought around Simone Donaldson (Halstead, Kan.) and Whitney Miller (Valley Center, Kan.).  HC would score one run in each of the next two innings but another Mac player crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth to put MC ahead 4-2; Suzi Hamilton (Raytown, Mo.) hit one over the left field fence on the first pitch of the inning.  The Broncos scored one in the top of the fifth and then on five hits, brought around five more in the sixth to leap-frog McPherson, going ahead 8-4; an additional three runs were scored by Hastings in the seventh.  The ‘Dogs tried to come back, scoring two on homeruns by Miller and Kaiser but ran out of pitches, losing 11-6.

Mac ended the contest with eight hits, led by Kaiser’s two home runs; she also had a team-high four RBIs.  Six other players put the bat on the ball.  Miller made it safely to first base twice as she not only homered but earned a walk too.

16 hits were tallied by HC in their win; Taylor Erienbusch topped the team with her four and was followed by Haley Burge and Kayla Mohr who had three apiece.  Kelsey Hoehler recorded two hits and led the squad in RBIs with four, three of which came on her three-run home run.

Kaila Atkinson (Magnolia, Texas) started on the mound for McPherson, logging three innings pitched while giving up five hits, two earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts in the 14 batters she faced.  Al. Love came in relief in the fourth and finished out the game; she recorded eight earned runs, one unearned, and struck out one in her 23 batters faced.

Game 3 – OBU – L 2-8

In the Lady Bulldog’s final game of the festival, it was all Oklahoma Baptist from the get-go.  The Bison scored two runs in each of the first three innings while Mac struggled to get a couple of hits; two of OBU’s players crossed the plate via an error of MC.  The host eam scored again in the bottom of the fourth to go up 7-0 and following their first run in the fifth, the game was called due to the eight-run rule.

The two hits logged by McPherson came off the bats of McKenna Deckard (Hutchinson, Kan.) and Miller; Miller also made it on safely via a walk, as did Al. Love.  Kaci Nichols (Wilson, Kan.) touched first base after getting hit by a pitch and Donaldson reached on an error.

12 hits by seven different Bison players were registered by OBU.  Krystal Johnson grabbed a team-high three, singling each time she went to the plate.  Three players tallied two hits apiece while three others had one.  Kenna Self brought around three with her two hits.

Al. Love recorded another loss for MC as she pitched the complete four and a third-inning game.  She faced 26 batters and struck out five while surrendering five earned and three unearned runs on 12 hits.

The Mac softball team is scheduled play Central Christian College on March 5th on the west side of McPherson; game time is still pending as snow still covers most of the field.
