Dr. Doris Coppock ’48: Dr. Coppock has been a pioneer. She played women’s sports at McPherson College before there were many organized sports for women. And as a McPherson College coach, she would continue that struggle to keep support going in women’s basketball, softball, and tennis. In recognition of her success throughout those years, she was presented the Honor Award from the Kansas Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1980, followed by her induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1993 for “Outstanding Achievement and Meritorious Service.” Coppock also served as chair for two years of the National Examinations and Ratings Committee for basketball when the decision was made to change from six to five players and the 30-second clock was introduced.

Coppock taught in the physical education department at McPherson College from 1950-92, and served as chair of the department from 1964-92. She has also chaired the McPherson College faculty and directed campus choirs. She was awarded a Distinguished Service Award from McPherson College in 1985, and the Citation of Merit in 1993. Her service to the McPherson Church of the Brethren is long standing and has extended from serving as board chair and moderator to church music director.
