Guy Hayes ’34: Guy Hayes came to college football late—in his senior year with only one year of experience. The closest he had been to a football field was as a cheerleader for the 1931 Bulldogs. In the fall of 1933, he switched from guard to tackle and became the leader the football team had been seeking. That season the team won six games before losing to Ottawa in the championship game of the Kansas Conference. For his efforts, Hayes was elected to the all-conference team by both the “Topeka Daily Capital” and the “Kansas City Journal Post.” He also participated in track.

After graduation, Hayes taught school in a one-room schoolhouse and later taught high school. He came to work at McPherson College in 1950 and remained until 1970. He taught rural life, speech, debate and oratory, and was director of admissions and financial aid. During his years at McPherson, Hayes served as track coach when the team finished second in the conference in 1953. He also served as football coach under Chalmer Woodard and Sid Smith, and officiated basketball and football for 34 years.

Hayes has served on the McPherson College Board of Trustees, the McPherson YMCA Board, the McPherson Planning Commission, and has been active in the McPherson County Council on Aging and AARP. He is a charter member of 52 years in the Noon Kiwanis Club and was Kansas Kiwanis Governor in 1978-79. Hayes also remains very active in the McPherson Church of the Brethren.
